Most air purifier filters last anywhere between one and five years, the later being the most common. HEPA filters and activated carbon or some combination of the two is very common types of filters that are used for air purification systems.

The job of an air purifier filter is to purify and contain pollutants in the air including but not limited too: airborne bacteria, surface bacteria, airborne viruses, surface viruses, airborne particles, gases, odors and other contaminants.

Because the filters job is to trap and contain pollutants in the environment, one of the biggest arguments against an air purifier filter is that it can become a breeding ground for dust and bacteria that has been trapped within it.

Careful monitoring of the filter and regular maintenance will prevent this. Some systems also have pre-filters that trap large particles; these filters can be vacuumed regularly to maintain top effectiveness.

Air purifier filters need to be replaced when they become clogged with dust and allergens. You will know that the filter needs to be replaced when it is providing resistance to airflow. When a carbon activated filter needs to be replaced you will likely smell an unpleasant odor emanating from the system.

With due care and routine maintenance an air purifier filter system can be a cost effective and efficient method of air purification.
